"Europa"
How did it begin?
A group of young girl is playing and picking up flowers along the bank of the river, where the water melts with the sea.
Among them is Europa, the daughter of Agenor, the Phoenician King, and Queen Telephassa of Tyre in Asia Minor.
Suddenly, a shining white bull appears, with short horns, a shining star on the forehead and its expression is not a threatening one.
The young girl approaches her flowers to the white as snow muzzle; the shining bull kneels down offering his small horns to the garland..
The young princess dares to mount on the bull’s back…
Then, suddenly the white beast approaches the sea and it is too late!
Zeus, concealed under the shining bull features, swims to reach the opposite coast the imposing body emerging from water so that the girl don’t gets wet..
The young princess holds a horn with her hand till they reach the other coast that will be named after the girl...Europe.
The roman poet Ovid wrote, poetically, the following depiction of Zeus' seduction:
And gradually she lost her fear, and he
Offered his breast for her virgin caresses,
His horns for her to wind with chains of flowers
Until the princess dared to mount his back
Her pet bull's back, unwitting whom she rode.
Then slowly, slowly down the broad, dry beach
First in the shallow waves the great god set
His spurious hooves, then sauntered further out
Till in the open sea he bore his prize
Fear filled her heart as, gazing back, she saw
The fast receding sands. Her right hand grasped
A horn, the other lent upon his back ...
In the tales of Homers, Licophron and Herodotus, the story of Asia and Europe is more a story of discord.
Discord was born with the kidnapping of a young girl, Europa. |
